A few hours ago I was reminded of what Mandi and I celebrated at this time of year, back when we were together. This makes me amused, but it also reminds me how lonely I feel.
Had a nice day, all told, though.
Started playing UFO again. God, I'm a big nerd. Decided to try something out and have been playing it without saving, except when I'm leaving the game.
SO MUCH HARDER!
It's the sort of game which is sufficiently unforgiving even when you're able to save mid-combat, then reload when you get blown up the next turn.
Without that recourse, you have to plan so much more strategically.
Ordinarily I'd have an elite group of soldiers, moving from mission to mission. If any of them is killed, I reload and try it again.
So far, I've already had an entire assault team horribly killed. I had to replace my plane and all my gear, in addition to getting an all new team.
The game feels very right this way, though. Much more skill-based. Having to play the odds makes things feel more real. Means I have to optimise every opportunity. Crouch at every opportunity, to make me harder to hit. Get as close as possible before every shot.
Feels edgy.
In a lot of ways it's like the difference between computer games and tabletop RPGs. No way to go back. Only deal with consequences and move forward.[/Filthy nerd]
Eventually my family and I decided we should have some breakfast. So we headed off into the lovely evening and sought out the Bogart Restaurant, on Glebe Point Road.
Lovely dinner. A truly excellent Panna Cotta. Mmm.

secondly, i agree completely, especially in the case of rpg's i hate p[eople that constantly save and reload, it interupts the flow of the game
